Tram and Ring Outing 2016

On a what was a lovely October morning, we set out for our annual Melbourne ringers outing, along with other ringers from Ticknall, Repton, Breedon, Aston-on-Trent and Wellsbourne.

This year the trip had an unusual twist and was based on the Nottingham Tram, with 5 towers close to the tram line.

Our first tower was St. Mary's, in the old village of Clifton. A lovely rural setting hidden away from the main A453 road into Nottingham. This was a lovely set of bells, although a very small entrance into the ringing room. It also had an usual set of steps to the ringing room inside one of the pillars, right next to the church alter.

Next we boarded the tram for Holy Trinity Clifton. This was a very light 8 (3cwt) ring of bells, and quite a challenge to ring. However, we all managed to have a ring and perhaps were glad our own bells were a little heavier and easier to ring, but still a nice set of bells in a modern church.

Next stop was Nottingham City Centre, with everyone free to choose their own "watering hole". Several visited the cafe at St. Peter's church, where a pleasant light lunch was had by all.

The majestic 12 bells of St. Peter (22 cwt) were quit a contrast to the light bells at Holy Trinity, and we were able to ring out across the city centre.

Bullwell (15 cwt) was up next, and proved to be the tower we'd all remember. Maurice stood ready to ring up the second bell in peal, but after one pull the rope broke above the sally, somewhat of a shock, especially to Maurice. Fortunately the Bullwell tower captain was still around, and ably assisted by Christian and David, a replacement rope was soon fitted. Our ringing time was reduced, but we all had the chance to ring nonetheless.

Our final tower was Basford (14 cwt), and it is at this point it decided to rain - and quite heavily too! The bells were lovely and the church unusual, as it was an Anglican church that was also shared by the Greek Orthodox church as well.

After a hasty dash back to the tram stop in the pouring rain, we headed for Willow Lane and the Willow Green pub, where we were able to relax over a drink and a very tasty meal.

Thanks to Maurice for all his hard work organising the day which we all thoroughly enjoyed.
